The Highland Festival weekend includes five dance competitions. All dance events will be held in the Hogan Center. Starting Friday evening, for the 50th anniversary of the festival, a choreographed broadsword competition will be held. Saturday morning is the Great Lakes Open Championship, where premier dancers from the Midwest and Canada compete dancing the current highland steps that the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dance has set for the current year. The afternoon dancers will compete in the Great Lakes Open Premiership with set steps in the National dances. Sunday morning the pre-premier dancers compete with highland and national dances. Completing the dance events on Sunday afternoon is the Great Lakes Closed Championship. The top dancers in each age group will go on to represent the Midwest region at the US Championship of Highland Dance in July.
